India has taken a landmark step towards modernising rail-based cargo transportation with the commencement of technical trials for its first-ever Vande Bharat Freight EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) in Rajasthan’s Kota Division. Developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, the 16-coach prototype is expected to redefine time-sensitive freight movement by combining higher speeds, advanced technology and improved operational efficiency. 

The trial programme began on July 29 on the Nagda–Kota–Sawai Madhopur section of the West Central Railway and is scheduled to continue for nearly a month. During the initial trial, the freight train achieved speeds of up to 145 kmph, making it one of the fastest cargo train prototypes developed by Indian Railways. Officials are conducting multiple test runs daily under varying operational conditions to evaluate the train’s performance before commercial deployment. 

Unlike conventional freight trains, the Vande Bharat Freight EMU has been designed specifically for transporting parcels, e-commerce consignments, perishable goods and other high-value, time-critical cargo. The self-propelled train eliminates the need for a separate locomotive, enabling quicker acceleration, reduced transit times and enhanced energy efficiency. This makes it particularly suitable for supporting India's rapidly expanding e-commerce, cold-chain and express logistics sectors. 

The comprehensive testing programme includes oscillation trials at speeds ranging from 120 kmph to 145 kmph, emergency braking distance assessments, coupler force measurements, curve negotiation tests, traction and braking performance evaluations, regenerative energy testing, signalling compatibility checks, telecommunications interference analysis and safety validation of onboard systems such as CCTV, lighting and automatic doors. These trials are intended to ensure the train meets stringent safety and operational standards before entering commercial service. 

The Kota Division has emerged as Indian Railways’ preferred testing corridor for advanced rolling stock due to its robust track infrastructure, modern signalling systems and high-speed testing capability. Over the past few years, the division has successfully hosted trials for several next-generation trainsets, reinforcing its reputation as a key centre for railway innovation. 

For the logistics industry, the Vande Bharat Freight EMU represents a major advancement in multimodal cargo transportation. Faster parcel trains can help reduce delivery lead times, improve network reliability and encourage a shift from road to rail for express freight. This aligns with the government's broader objective of enhancing logistics efficiency, lowering transportation costs and increasing rail’s share in the national freight market.

If the trials are completed successfully, the Vande Bharat Freight EMU could pave the way for a new generation of high-speed cargo services, strengthening India's supply chain infrastructure while supporting sustainable and technology-driven freight mobility.

Positioned at the intersection of major freight corridors, the facility continues to play a pivotal role in improving supply chain efficiency for northern India. Recent infrastructure additions and dedicated freight connectivity have further strengthened Dadri's position as a key logistics gateway for domestic and international trade. Swarup emphasised that CONCOR remains committed to delivering reliable, efficient and cost-effective logistics solutions through continuous investment in infrastructure, digitalisation and customer-focused services. PM Modi launches first Hydrogen-Powered Train on 89-km Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana

India has entered a new phase in sustainable rail transportation with the launch of its first indigenous hydrogen-powered train, a landmark initiative that strengthens the country's clean mobility ambitions while reinforcing its commitment to green infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the hydrogen-powered train from Jind in Haryana, where it will initially operate on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat route as a pilot project. The launch was accompanied by the inauguration and foundation laying of development projects worth nearly ₹14,700 crore across the state. Developed under the 'Make in India' initiative, the hydrogen train represents a significant technological milestone for Indian Railways. The train comprises two hydrogen-powered driving coaches and eight passenger coaches, with a seating capacity of around 2,600 passengers and an operational speed of up to 75 kmph. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the train generates electricity through the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as the by-product, making it a zero-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains. The Jind–Sonipat section has been selected as the first operational corridor owing to its suitable operational characteristics and passenger profile. Supporting infrastructure, including hydrogen production, storage and refuelling facilities, has also been established to enable seamless operations of the pilot service. The project is expected to provide valuable operational insights before hydrogen technology is deployed on additional routes across the country. From a supply chain and logistics perspective, the development reflects India's broader strategy to decarbonise transport infrastructure while fostering domestic capabilities in green hydrogen technologies. Although the immediate application is passenger mobility, the successful deployment of hydrogen-powered rail systems could accelerate future adoption across freight corridors and industrial logistics, particularly on routes where full electrification is either economically or operationally challenging. The initiative also aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and the country's target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Globally, only a handful of countries, including Germany, Japan, China and the United States, have introduced hydrogen-powered trains in various capacities. With this launch, India joins the select league of nations deploying hydrogen rail technology, demonstrating its growing emphasis on indigenous innovation, energy security and sustainable transportation. As hydrogen ecosystems mature, such projects are expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of low-carbon logistics and multimodal connectivity.
