Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) has launched a new GDP-certified pharmaceutical trade lane from India, marking a significant step in enhancing the global supply chain for pharma products. The inaugural shipment, conducted by Penta Freight India on behalf of an Indian pharmaceutical company, was transported via a Maersk Air Cargo-Magma Boeing 747-400F freighter from Frankfurt Hahn Airport, Germany. The cargo originated from Mumbai International Airport and was transferred through Maersk’s Frankfurt cargo hub before arriving at Frankfurt Hahn Airport.
This development is part of RFD’s partnership with Xperts Group, a Chicago-based pharma and life sciences logistics, trucking, and warehousing company. Upon arrival at RFD, the pharmaceutical cargo was immediately transferred from the aircraft into a reefer truck operated by Xperts Group, with handling facilitated by Menzies Aviation.
“The establishment at RFD of our GDP and GSP process for handling import pharma and life science products responds to growing demand from the pharma sector in India,” said Zack Oakley, Executive Director of Chicago Airport. He noted that Indian pharmaceutical companies and their freight forwarders are keen to improve efficiency by using less congested airport systems like RFD.
An official from Penta Freight highlighted the growing market for Indian pharma products in Chicago and noted the benefits of the new route. “Flights into RFD are direct and the aircraft is at the ramp ready to unload within five minutes of landing, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and costs. By unloading directly into reefer trucks, we also minimise risks associated with traditional airside handling processes,” the spokesperson said.
This new trade lane is expected to boost pharma shipments from India, offering a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution for the U.S. market.
