FIATA endorses IATA cargo handling manual, paving the way for enhanced air cargo efficiency

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations have jointly announced the endorsement of the IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM) by FIATA, marking a significant milestone in air cargo operations. This endorsement follows a comprehensive year-long process of collaboration and review between the two organisations, aimed at streamlining air cargo handling practices.

The ICHM provides standardised procedures for airlines, ground handling agents (GHAs), and freight forwarders, fostering consistency and efficiency throughout the cargo process. By adopting these guidelines, stakeholders can better align their operations, leveraging their expertise to enhance efficiency across the supply chain.

Brendan Sullivan, IATA Global Head of Cargo, emphasised that FIATA’s endorsement supports IATA’s goal of a safer and more efficient air cargo industry. “Standardisation reduces risks and enhances operational performance, benefiting the global supply chain and the millions reliant on it,” he stated.

FIATA’s collaboration with IATA ensures that the ICHM addresses the specific needs of freight forwarders of all sizes, including SMEs. Stéphane Graber, FIATA Director General, highlighted that the standardised procedures will not only expedite processes but also elevate service quality for shippers, with a strong emphasis on safety and security.

This endorsement aligns major players in the air cargo handling sector around a unified set of global standards, heralding a new era of cooperation between freight forwarders and airlines, focused on operational excellence and efficiency.
