India and Denmark are forging ahead in their maritime collaboration, focusing on advancing sustainable practices under the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership. This cooperation spans various critical areas, including quality shipping, port state control, maritime training, research and development, piracy, green technology, and shipbuilding. Denmark, recognised globally for its expertise in green maritime technologies, has been instrumental in helping India align with its Sagarmala initiative and Maritime India Vision 2030.
A key milestone in their partnership was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2019, later revised in 2022. This MoU includes a new clause to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in India, emphasising both nations’ commitment to enhancing expertise in green maritime technologies and knowledge exchange. Denmark’s contributions in port digitalisation, automation, and cyber security have supported India’s aim to develop world-class smart ports.
High-ranking Danish officials, including H.E. Mr. Morten Bødskov, Minister of Industry, and Ambassador H.E. Mr. Freddy Svane, have been pivotal in advancing these initiatives. Both countries are also focusing on decarbonisation, with joint projects targeting hydrogen and ammonia-based fuels for ships. As part of India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, decarbonising ports remains a central goal, with Denmark’s success in offshore wind energy playing a key role in shaping renewable energy solutions for Indian ports.
Denmark’s leadership in maritime training and polar navigation offers new opportunities for collaboration, with plans underway to upgrade Indian seafarer training programs to meet global standards. Commenting on this partnership, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, emphasised the shared vision: “India and Denmark’s collaboration in the maritime sector is a testament to our commitment to sustainable development and innovation. Together, we aim to set a global benchmark in green maritime practices.” Looking ahead, the Joint Action Plan on Green Strategic Partnership (2021-2026) will continue driving projects in port modernisation, maritime digitalisation, green fuel development, and advanced seafarer training, positioning India and Denmark as leaders in sustainable maritime innovation.
