The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed keen interest in investing in Chattogram port, a move poised to enhance economic ties between the two nations. During a meeting on September 29, UAE Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdullah Ali Al Hamoudi discussed this potential collaboration with Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, the advisor on Textiles, Jute, and Shipping.
Ambassador Al Hamoudi emphasised that the UAE’s investment in Chattogram port could provide significant mutual benefits. He highlighted the expertise of DP World, a leading Dubai-based logistics company with a presence in over 60 countries, including successful port management operations in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. This experience positions the UAE as a formidable partner in developing the infrastructure of Chattogram port, which is vital for enhancing Bangladesh’s maritime capabilities.
Welcoming this initiative, Adviser Hossain stated that Bangladesh is open to foreign investments and appreciates the UAE’s interest. He pointed out that the relationship between the two nations spans various sectors, including trade and commerce, and that this investment could elevate those ties to new heights.
Additionally, the adviser urged the UAE to simplify transit visa processes for Bangladeshi sailors, a request the ambassador agreed to consider. Hossain also encouraged investments in Bangladesh’s burgeoning jute and textiles sectors, highlighting the increasing global demand for environmentally friendly jute products.
As Bangladesh continues to attract foreign investment in its textile and jute sectors, the UAE’s interest marks a significant step towards fortifying economic cooperation. This partnership could not only streamline logistical operations at Chattogram port but also enhance the overall supply chain capabilities in the region.
The ongoing discussions reflect a broader trend of collaboration in maritime logistics, aligning with the UAE’s strategic interests in expanding its footprint in South Asia. With the UAE’s investment, Chattogram port could become a vital hub for trade, further bolstering Bangladesh’s position in the global logistics network.
