Adani Ports signs 30-Year agreement to operate Dar es Salaam Port terminal

Adani International Ports Holdings Pte Ltd. (AIPH), a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ), has entered into a 30-year concession agreement with the Tanzania Ports Authority to operate and manage Container Terminal 2 (CT2) at the Dar es Salaam Port, Tanzania. This strategic move marks a significant step in APSEZ’s ambition to become a leading global port operator by 2030.

Dar es Salaam Port serves as a vital gateway with robust connectivity through roadways and railways. CT2, comprising four berths, boasts an annual cargo handling capacity of 1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). In 2023, CT2 handled 0.82 million TEUs, accounting for 83% of Tanzania’s total container volumes.

AIPH, in collaboration with AD Ports Group and East Harbour Terminals Limited (EHTL), has established East Africa Gateway Limited (EAGL) to oversee this venture. APSEZ will hold the majority stake and consolidate EAGL into its financial records.

EAGL has also finalised a Share Purchase Agreement to acquire a 95% stake in Tanzania International Container Terminal Services Limited (TICTS) from Hutchison Port Holdings Limited and Harbours Investment Limited for $39.5 million. TICTS currently owns all port handling equipment and employs the necessary workforce. The operation of CT2 will be conducted through TICTS.

Karan Adani, Managing Director of APSEZ, expressed confidence in the venture, stating, “The signing of the concession for Container Terminal 2 at Dar es Salaam Port aligns with APSEZ’s goal to become one of the largest port operators globally by 2030. Our expertise and network in ports and logistics will enhance trade volumes and economic cooperation between our ports and East Africa. We aim to transform Dar es Salaam Port into a world-class facility.”

This agreement signifies a major enhancement in the operational capabilities of Dar es Salaam Port, promising to bolster economic growth and trade efficiency in the region.
