Samskip and Matrans Rotterdam Terminal have announced the launch of a new terminal and future hub in Rotterdam, marking a significant advancement in their partnership and dedication to sustainability and reliable service.
Rotterdam, a key multimodal hub in Samskip’s network, has long been central to its operations. Acknowledging the importance of reliability and sustainability, Samskip and Matrans are committed to creating a customer-centric, integrated operation through this new development. The state-of-the-art green terminal will serve as the central hub for both companies’ containerised and breakbulk transport operations.
This new terminal will allow Samskip to achieve greater control over vessel, rail, and barge operations, addressing supply chain bottlenecks and inefficiencies. Complete visibility and control over the entire value chain will enable optimised planning and simplified operations, reducing costs and time associated with modal switches. Meanwhile, Matrans will continue its operations for existing customers in breakbulk, containers, and RoRo, including non-ferrous metals, forest products, general cargo, and project cargo.
Focusing on sustainable solutions, the new hub will drive multimodal transport through electrification of vehicles, shore power, and solar power, significantly reducing environmental impact. This will lead to faster and more reliable transit times for containerised and breakbulk transport, achieving the lowest possible CO2 footprint in line with Samskip’s and Matrans’ sustainability commitments.
Digital solutions will further optimise transport and operations, enhancing efficiency and reliability. Integrated IT systems across the supply chain will allow for dynamic prioritisation of cargo and greater operational flexibility, reinforcing Samskip’s and Matrans’ customer-centric approach.
Hans Vervat, owner of Matrans Rotterdam Terminal, expressed pride in this step towards the future: “This new terminal will greatly serve our current and future customers and protect the environment for years to come.” Samskip CEO Kari-Pekka Laaksonen emphasised the mission to deliver reliable logistics solutions, stating: “This project supports our customers and shows our sincere commitment to sustainability, placing it at the heart of our company to deliver our vision of making green logistics easy.”
