Effective July 1, 2024, the Madhya Pradesh government has made a significant decision to abolish transport check posts across the state. This move follows pressure from the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), which had raised concerns and threatened a truckers’ strike over the presence of these check posts at state borders.
The removal of these check posts marks a major stride towards achieving the goal set by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime of establishing a seamless national market. Despite GST implementation aiming to eliminate inter-state barriers, some states continued to operate such check posts, prompting ongoing objections from transport associations like AIMTC.
Recently, the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation had proposed revising fees at its 24 border check posts for the fiscal year 2024-25, indicating a potential change in approach before ultimately deciding to abolish them altogether.
In response to the decision, a representative from AIMTC commented, “Effective from July 1, 2024, check posts in the state of Madhya Pradesh have been abolished. This is a monumental step towards easing road transport operations and reducing delays for our industry.”
The removal of these check posts is expected to streamline logistics operations, reduce transit times, and enhance efficiency in the movement of goods across Madhya Pradesh, benefiting both businesses and consumers alike.
