DB Schenker powers up India’s green transition with major wind turbine blade shipment

As the bidding war intensifies for Deutsche Bahn’s logistics unit between DSV and a CVC Capital Partners-led consortium, DB Schenker remains focused on its global project cargo operations. The company is spearheading a significant logistics effort, transporting 240 wind turbine blades from Sheyang, China, to Kandla Port, India, for Envision Energy, the country’s leading wind turbine supplier.

Thorsten Meincke, DB Schenker’s Member of the Management Board for Air and Ocean Freight, commented, “We are proud to support India’s transition from fossil fuels to green energy. As India’s economy grows, so does the need for sustainable energy solutions. The delivery of 80 wind turbines will contribute to a stable and sustainable power supply.”

This extensive project, overseen by DB Schenker’s Global Projects & Industry Solutions team, began in May and is set to continue until December 2024. Daniel Wieland, Senior Vice President of Global Projects & Industry Solutions, highlighted the company’s expertise, stating, “DB Schenker is a world leader in logistics for renewable energy projects. This large-scale undertaking showcases our exceptional project management and technical skills. Our teams in China and India are working closely to ensure the highest efficiency and reliability.”

The shipment involves nearly 274,000 cubic meters of cargo, weighing approximately 4,600 tons. Each wind turbine blade measures 76.8 meters in length and weighs around 19.3 tons. With a single turbine spanning 153.6 meters, it surpasses the height of the Statue of Liberty.

DB Schenker is managing every aspect of the logistics process, including pick-up, export clearance, loading, unloading, and ocean freight, ensuring the smooth delivery of this critical component for India’s renewable energy infrastructure.
