Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today lay the foundation stone for the ambitious Rs 76,200 crore Vadhavan Port project in Maharashtra, marking a significant leap in India’s maritime infrastructure. Set to become a world-class maritime gateway, Vadhavan Port will cater to large container vessels, offer deeper drafts, and accommodate ultra-large cargo ships, positioning India as a formidable player in global trade.
Located near Dahanu town in the Palghar district, Vadhavan Port will be one of India’s largest deep-water ports, directly connecting to international shipping routes. This strategic location is expected to reduce transit times and costs, providing a major boost to the country’s trade and economic growth. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the port will feature deep berths, efficient cargo handling facilities, and modern port management systems.
The Vadhavan project is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and contribute to the region’s economic development. Emphasising sustainable development, the port will adhere to stringent ecological standards, minimising its environmental impact. Once operational, it will enhance India’s maritime connectivity and bolster its status as a global trade hub.
In addition to the Vadhavan Port, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for 218 fisheries projects worth around Rs 1,560 crore. These initiatives aim to strengthen the sector’s infrastructure and productivity, creating over five lakh employment opportunities in the fisheries sector.
The Prime Minister will also launch the National Roll Out of the Vessel Communication and Support System, developed by ISRO, at a cost of approximately Rs 360 crore. This indigenous technology will enable two-way communication for fishermen at sea, assist in rescue operations, and enhance the safety of those in the fisheries sector. The project will see the phased installation of 1 lakh transponders on mechanised and motorised fishing vessels across 13 coastal states and Union Territories.
Additional initiatives include the development of fishing harbours, integrated aquaparks, and the adoption of advanced technologies like the recirculatory aquaculture system and biofloc. These projects will be implemented across multiple states, offering crucial infrastructure and high-quality inputs to boost fish production, improve post-harvest management, and create sustainable livelihoods for millions involved in the fisheries sector.
PM Modi will also lay the foundation for fishery infrastructure projects such as the development and modernisation of fishing harbours, fish landing centres, and fish markets, enhancing facilities and ensuring hygienic conditions for post-harvest management of fish and seafood.
