The Port of Los Angeles saw container throughput increase of 4% year-on-year in July, handling 890,800 TEU, as US consumer’s purchasing began to build momentum last summer.
The surge in US consumer purchasing has resulted in 12 consecutive months of year-on-year growth at the port.
Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said, “This remarkable, sustained import surge is pushing the supply chain to new levels.”
“Credit goes to our longshore workers and terminal operators for helping the Port of Los Angeles achieve an average of more than 11,000 TEU exchanged on each vessel call, the best in the business.”
July 2021 loaded imports reached 469,361 TEU compared to the previous year, an increase of 3%, while loaded exports decreased 28% to 91,440 TEU – the lowest number of exports at the port since 2005.
Empty containers were up 20% to 329,999 TEU due to the continued demand in Asia.
Seven months into the 2021 calendar year, overall cargo volume at the port is up 37% year-on-year at 6.3 million TEU.
Seroka added, “With space tight at warehouses, rail yards and container terminals as we enter the traditional ‘peak’ shipping season, we are offering new data tools and incentives to help improve throughput and efficiency.”
“Additional strategies are being developed in conjunction with both the private sector and federal government.”
