Export and import activities between Bangladesh and India resumed on Wednesday morning via the Benapole Land Port after a 47-day suspension. The trade halt was imposed on July 19 due to heightened security concerns following the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and public protests in India.
The suspension affected cargo transportation and passenger services between the two countries. However, with the recent stabilisation of the political situation in Bangladesh, following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 and the establishment of an interim government, conditions have normalised. This led to renewed discussions between high-level officials from both nations, culminating in the resumption of trade services.
Benapole Land Port Deputy Director Rezaul Karim confirmed the revival of trade operations. In response to the resumption, Mohsin Milon, President of the Benapole Import-Export Association, expressed relief, highlighting the significance of the railway route for various imports. Goods such as stones, gypsum, and cement production materials are transported through this channel, along with garment products, chemicals, and motor vehicles.
The resumption of services is expected to bolster trade between the two countries, mitigating the disruptions experienced by traders and industries reliant on this crucial transport link.
