DP World has expanded its Marine Services fleet by adding two newly built vessels, furthering its focus on sustainability and operational efficiency. The vessels, Navios Utmost and Navios Unite, were officially named during a ceremony at the Changhong shipyard in Zhoushan, China. These vessels will bolster DP World’s Unifeeder fleet, as part of a fleet renewal initiative aimed at deploying more efficient vessels and exploring alternative fuel sources.
The two vessels, Sapphire 5300 compact gearless container ships, are equipped with advanced maritime technologies designed to enhance cargo handling, reduce operational costs, and contribute to a more sustainable maritime sector. Both ships feature hull optimisation and energy-saving technologies that maximise fuel efficiency and minimise their carbon footprint. For instance, Navios Utmost is expected to save around 1,700 metric tonnes of bunker fuel annually, resulting in a 15-20% reduction in carbon emissions on its designated routes. The compact design of these vessels also enables them to access smaller ports and inland terminals, opening new supply chain opportunities.
Navios Utmost will serve on Unifeeder’s Far East Madras Express Service (FME), while Navios Unite will operate within the Asian Gulf India Service (AGI). These vessels represent DP World’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices and cutting-edge technologies into its global operations.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World’s Group Chairman and CEO, emphasised the company’s dedication to sustainability: “Investing in these state-of-the-art vessels highlights our commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency across the global maritime sector. With advanced technologies, we reduce our environmental impact while enhancing service flexibility and reliability.”
Ganesh Raj, Global COO of Marine Services, added, “These new vessels strengthen our operational capabilities and enhance our ability to meet evolving customer needs. Our investment ensures the seamless flow of global trade through an agile and efficient fleet.”
The vessels are part of DP World’s broader strategy to ensure sustainable growth in trade across the regions it serves. The company has recently undertaken other green initiatives, including long-term charter agreements for methanol-capable feeder vessels and a collaboration with MPC Container Ships ASA to invest in Energy Efficiency Technology. Additionally, the launch of the “GreenBox” solution aims to decarbonise seaborne supply chains, further cementing DP World’s commitment to sustainable operations.
