DP World handles largest-ever container vessel at ICTT Cochin

DP World has achieved a significant milestone by handling its largest-ever container vessel, MSC MARA, at the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) in Cochin. The MSC MARA, one of the largest container vessels to dock at an Indian port, boasts a length of 364 meters, a width of 51 meters, and a capacity of 15,934 TEUs. This also marks the highest throughput ever achieved on the MSC MARA at ICTT, Cochin.

ICTT Cochin, India’s first transshipment terminal, has handled over 7 million TEUs since its inception. In December 2023, the terminal commissioned two state-of-the-art Ship-to-Shore (STS) Mega Max cranes, capable of handling up to 25 container rows. Additionally, the terminal introduced four new e-RTGs and expanded yard capacity, enabling faster vessel turnaround times and sustainable cargo movement. These upgrades have significantly enhanced lift capacity and handling capabilities, accommodating Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) and improving overall productivity.

The berthing of MSC MARA underscores ICTT Cochin’s role as a preferred gateway and burgeoning transshipment terminal for cargo movement to and from markets in South India. DP World Cochin’s strategic geographic location, in close proximity to major maritime sea routes, positions it as the natural gateway to the industrial and agricultural markets of South and West India.

ICTT Vallarpadam’s substantial cargo growth highlights its importance as a key hub for cargo movement and connectivity. By connecting nearly 50% of EXIM cargo directly to the Middle East, Far East, Europe, and the Mediterranean through mainline services, the terminal plays a crucial role in facilitating trade flows. Furthermore, it serves as a vital hub for coastal cargo movement between India’s east and west coasts, enhancing regional connectivity and trade efficiency.

This achievement marks a pivotal moment for DP World and ICTT Cochin, reflecting their commitment to improving infrastructure and expanding capacity to support global trade.
